Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups cake flour
- 4 large egg whites
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Confectioners’ sugar (for frosting)
- Unsweetened cocoa powder (for chocolate frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- Cream the softened butter and granulated sugar in a stand mixer on high speed for approximately 5 minutes until the mixture is light and fluffy.
- Whisk together the egg whites, milk, and vanilla extract in one bowl, and sift the flours, baking powder, and salt together in a separate bowl.
- With the mixer on low, add one-third of the dry ingredients followed by half of the liquid mixture; repeat the pattern and finish with the remaining dry ingredients.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Prepare the chocolate and vanilla buttercreams by beating butter and confectioners’ sugar with their respective flavorings, then frost the completely cooled cake.
Notes
For the cleanest slices, use a sharp knife dipped in hot water and wiped dry between every cut. If you want to make this ahead of time, the cake base can be baked a day early and stored tightly wrapped at room temperature before frosting the morning of your celebration.
