Description
Transform a standard cake into a stunning superhero centerpiece using a simple template hack and vibrant fondant. This method prioritizes moist textures and professional-looking results without the need for advanced sculpting skills.
Ingredients
- 1 box cake mix (plus pudding mix, extra egg, and sour cream for density)
- 1 tub vanilla or chocolate frosting
- 24 oz red fondant
- 4 oz black fondant
- 4 oz white fondant
- Water (for adhering)
- Cornstarch (for dusting)
Instructions
- Bake the cake in a 10-inch round or large rectangle pan and allow it to cool completely before carving.
- Place a printed Spider-Man face template on the cake and use a sharp knife to cut around the shape, trimming the edges for a rounded effect.
- Apply a thin crumb coat of frosting over the entire shaped cake to seal in crumbs and act as an adhesive.
- Roll out the red fondant to 1/8-inch thickness and drape it over the cake, smoothing it with your hands or a fondant smoother.
- Cut the eye shapes from black and white fondant using the template, then glue the white inner eyes onto the black frames with a dab of water.
- Affix the eyes to the cake and create the signature webbing pattern by rolling out thin black fondant strings and adhering them with water.
Notes
For the cleanest lines when carving, consider chilling the cake in the freezer for 20-30 minutes before you begin cutting. When working with red fondant, keep your hands lightly dusted with cornstarch to prevent the dye from staining your skin or the white fondant pieces.
