Description
This Apple Dump Cake is the ultimate warm and gooey comfort dessert, combining fresh, spiced apples with a convenient spice cake mix. It delivers a luscious, melt-in-your-mouth texture with a golden, buttery crust in just over an hour.
Ingredients
- 7-8 medium to large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and sliced 1/4 inch thick
- 1 box (15.25 oz) spice cake mix
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1 pinch ground nutmeg
- 3/4 to 1 cup salted butter, cold
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and thoroughly grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- Spread the peeled and sliced apples in an even layer in the pan, sprinkle with white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and toss gently to coat.
- Pour the dry spice cake mix over the apples and use a spatula to spread it evenly without mixing it into the fruit.
- Slice the cold butter into thin squares and arrange them over the entire surface of the cake mix to ensure even hydration.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes, checking halfway through to add extra butter to any dry flour patches, until the top is golden and the apples are bubbling.
- Allow the cake to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving to allow the juices to thicken and set.
Notes
To ensure a perfectly moist topping, pay close attention to the butter placement; covering as much of the dry cake mix as possible prevents chalky spots. Using a mix of tart and sweet apples provides the most balanced flavor profile for the molten center.
