Ingredients
- Cooking spray or grease and flour (for pans)
- 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon butter flavoring
- 1/2 cup sprinkles (optional)
- 4 cups confectioner’s sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
- 2-4 tablespoons whole milk (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch cake pans or one 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, cream together the room temperature butter and granulated sugar with an electric mixer until the mixture is light and fluffy.
- In a separate medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and vanilla extract.
- Alternately add the wet and dry ingredients to the creamed butter, mixing on low speed for 2 to 3 minutes until the batter is smooth.
- Gently fold in sprinkles if using, then divide the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the edges are golden and the center springs back when touched.
- Cool in the pans for 10 minutes before moving to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Prepare the buttercream by beating butter, confectioner’s sugar, butter flavoring, and milk until light and creamy, then spread over the cooled cake.
Notes
For the best results, ensure your butter is truly at room temperature—soft to the touch but not melting—to achieve the necessary aeration during the creaming stage. If you prefer a more intense vanilla flavor, you can scrape the seeds of a fresh vanilla bean into the batter along with the extract.
