Description

These homemade funnel cake fries offer a nostalgic fairground experience, featuring a light, airy dough that is fried until golden and tossed in fragrant cinnamon sugar. Perfectly crisp on the outside and tender on the inside, they are a simple yet indulgent treat for any weekend gathering.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for coating)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the equipment. Pour oil into a heavy saucepan to 350°F and line a plate with paper towels.
  2. Whisk dry base. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl until well-aerated.
  3. Prepare wet mixture. Whisk the egg, sugar, milk, and vanilla in a separate bowl until light and foamy.
  4. Combine into batter. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry, whisking until the batter is completely smooth and ribbon-like.
  5. Rest the batter. Let the mixture sit for five minutes to allow the gluten to relax for better texture.
  6. Mix cinnamon sugar. Combine the extra sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl for immediate coating after frying.
  7. Fry the fries. Pipe lines of batter into the hot oil and fry for about thirty seconds until golden brown.
  8. Drain and coat. Remove fries from the oil, drain briefly on paper towels, and toss immediately in the cinnamon sugar.

Notes

  • Maintain a consistent oil temperature of 350°F to ensure the fries stay crisp rather than greasy.
  • Cut the squeeze bottle tip to a medium width to achieve the perfect balance between a crunchy shell and soft center.
  • Work in small batches to prevent the oil temperature from dropping, which leads to heavy, oil-logged pastries.
  • Toss the fries in the cinnamon sugar while they are still hot so the coating adheres properly to the surface.
